Archives of Hugo-winning SF information and discussion
"Let's Hear it for the Deaf Man" -- non-fiction Hugo-nominee
Author's reading of start of "China Mountain Zhang"
The original publisher's prices to obtain all this material
add up to well over $200 -- if you can still get it.
HOW DO I GET IT?
It comes in a variety of forms. If you have a CD-ROM
CD-ROM player, the CD is the best form since it has the multimedia
presentation under some OSs and all the data. If you have
a CD but do not have MS Windows or a Macintosh, you can still
browse the text and image files with your own native tools, the disk is
in ISO 9660 format and contains files in standard formats.
Next best way to get it is over the wire. You can use the
commercial internet to FTP it, or dial us with a high speed
modem and download the parts you need. With a v.32 bis or
PEP modem, you can download 2 megabytes of compressed material
in as little as 25 minutes, costing around $3 under the off-peak
long-distance calling plans of major phone companies. That's
similar to our shipping charge for the disks.
WHAT FORMAT IS IT IN?
On the CD, we'll have the files in a special format for the
multimedia presentation (Windows or Mac), but also have the
text files in Microsoft RTF format and the images in JPEG or
GIF format. We'll include the source and binaries to programs
to translate RTF format into plain ASCII, enhanced ASCII
and other formats. Most word processors can read this
format already. (Enhanced ASCII is ASCII with overstrikes
to provide underlining and bold face. It's easy to remove
the overstrikes if they are a problem.)
Translators are available on the net to map RTF to troff.
Most Mac and PC word processors can map RTF to Adobe PostScript.
Via the net or modem, it exists in the RTF, JPEG and GIF
formats, plus enhanced ASCII and other formats dictated by
reader demand.
The CD-ROM is in ISO 9660 format as well as Macintosh HFS format.
(One CD has both formats.)
WHAT'S THE TELEJOKEBOOK CD-ROM?
Our first pressing of the CD-Rom had some problems with the
MS-Windows Multimedia presentation. But the Jokebooks are all
there and working fine, and most of the SF works fine too,
including A Fire Upon the Deep for MS-Windows. But we can't
sell these at full price, so we're selling off the limited
quantity we have left for just $19.95. All the stuff is there
and works fine as RTF and text file available in ISO 9660 format
and HFS format.
The discounted disk is "as is" and no technical support is
available for it.
If you want this bargain "factory second" CD, order it as the
TeleJokebook CD-ROM. The full working 2nd version should be
called the Electric Science Fiction "1993 Hugo and Nebula Anthology."
For those interested in paper jokebooks, get the file
clarinet_info/jokebooks from ftp.clarinet.com.
WHAT DOES IT COST?
CD-ROM -- $29.95 -- also ask at your favourite bookseller or
software store.
TeleJokeBook CD-ROM -- $19.95 -- the same CD, but the Windows
presentation of much of the SF has some bugs. Limited
quantity, "as is."
Network access
Including Novels & RHF Jokebooks -- $29.95
Visa or MasterCard are accepted.
Disk/CD versions only: California Residents add 8.25% sales
tax. All CD orders in the USA add $2.50 Shipping and Handling
for Air. Add $5 for 2-day air delivery, $15 for overnight.
Outside the USA, we'll charge actual shipping + $1.50 handling.
Ditto for multiple orders.

ftp.clarinet.com has what you need.
